The Crow’s Nest Studio

Artist Fi Mackenzie Brixham, Devon

I paint to observe, to connect, and to appreciate in a new way.

My practice is continually evolving, changing with the seasons. Whether exploring the daily comings and goings of the harbour in Brixham, or quietly witnessing the ever-changing landscape of the Torbay coastline, or the changing light of Dartmoor — it is fascinating to me how atmosphere, stillness and light can transform, something in an instant.

It’s these moments - the ones we almost miss - that I love to paint.

The Story of The Crow’s Nest

The Crow’s Nest Studio takes its name from the history of this 1930s house, designed by and home to a Sea Captain in Brixham.

The loft, now my painting space and writing/reflection area, is filled with an ever-changing coastal light. Brixham people say that this beautiful town has its very own micro-climate and I’m certainly aware of that in this creative space.

The weather changes fast, which is fun for a painter because you really have to maintain a state of soft awareness. I’m learning that a dull, grey sky can quickly give way to something deeply pleasing. You can just never guess when!
